Learning Mandarin is so complex, and goes far beyond memorisation. It’s a whole new way of thinking, interpreting, and understanding communication. For that reason, it’s very difficult to gain momentum when starting out, and you really do need someone who deeply understands how both English and Mandarin work.
Yen-Min filled in so many of these easily misunderstood gaps for me in ways I’ve never experienced or comprehended when it comes to language learning. This was so vital to me being able to understand and retain everything.
Her knowledge of the functional, psychological, and cultural differences between the two languages were a real bridge for me to actually understand Mandarin coherently. Once this clicked, it was so easy and effortless to continue learning, and I really do put that down to her building that framework and foundation with me early on, which I’ll be forever grateful for!
Knowing what different radicals mean and are related to, and how they have a place in each character helped me remember them so much better, and Yen-Min had so many techniques for that. She just made everything so much easier to learn and retain.
